SchoolHouse Partners (SHP), a Houston based company, was founded in 2008 by Carter Higley and Mike Heinzmen who were inspired by their own experiences in the world of public education. They are simply two guys with business backgrounds who want to make a difference in our education system. Prior to launching SchoolHouse Partners, Mike spent over 20 years in school fundraising, and Carter served as a teacher through Teach For America in Compton, California. They recognized that they could build a business based on the collective buying power of families, and they set out to fund schools while fixing homes!
In 2011 Carter passed his responsibilities on to Jamil Higley. Jamil has a background in communications strategy and creative services across all media in addition to the mojo of a multi- tasking mama of two. She loved the idea of anything that makes life easier for moms. Let’s face it, while the guys might do the heavy lifting, the majority of decisions made for the home are made by women. Jamil does not have a green thumb, but she does enjoy the grassroots approach of marketing. She also is intrigued by the thought of her kids' schools earning money without her having to buy cookie dough or bake brownies…
How does SHP fix homes and fund schools? For a year, Carter and Mike interviewed home maintenance providers and learned a ton in the process, not only about home repairs but about how businesses should be run. SHP in turn created a pre-screened list of service providers that are committed to doing their best by customers. And on the funding side, the team made the commitmented to give 20% of their earnings back to schools.
Let’s be honest, when an a/c repair person begins to show you how your compressor works, 98% of us are lost! But at the end of the day 100% of us want someone who will be honest and do good work.
For the 2011-12 school year, SHP is launching a campaign to identify specific needs within schools. Parents can use their collective buying power; whenever they fix something at home through SHP they help to fund a project within their school!
Members receive SHP's monthly newsletter, "Your House, Only Better", with home improvement tips and service provider discounts.
Enrollment is simple. Any school can be designated however, to increase the money a school earns SHP will provide a website link and logo for use on school websites in addition to quarterly flyers to be sent home. PTA/PTO involvement makes a HUGE difference! Email us and we can get the ball rolling!
